Welcome to our web site “Sedge Island Decoys”.

The sedge islands, off of Island Beach State Park in Barnegat Bay, are inhabited by diverse wildlife.  This is where I was introduced to waterfowl hunting by my uncle over 40 years ago.  This became an important part of my life.  Hence the name “Sedge Island Decoys”.

To this day, I still hunt the islands and take care of my “aunt and uncle’s” shack on Island Beach State Park (one of a few remaining).

I was first introduced to decoys here at the age of 14 and my enthusiasm for these decoys took flight.  I purchased my first decoy,a repainted Mason, when I was 17.

Like many other people, I purchased whatever I could afford, which wasn’t much.  I was 19 years old working for Ma Bell and doing my army commitment at Fort Monmouth.  I joined the New Jersey Waterfowlers Association and became a trustee.  We had a membership table at The Point Pleasant Fire House Decoy Show that was run by Charlie Birdsall.  I asked if I could put a decoy or two on the table to sell.  I sold them both and I was bitten.  Now I had a way to support my habit.

Finally, the manager at the Bluffs’ Hotel in Bay Head asked me to come to a cocktail party to display my Conklin decoys.  It has been a love affair ever since.

For 7 years in the 90’s, I was the president of the New Jersey Decoy Collectors Association and continue to be an active member of this association and several others.
